Spiralog and Files-11Dcan run simultaneously on the same computer. You can use Spiralog in/an OpenVMS Cluster or on a standalone computer.Spiralog provides:o Online backup and restoreDSpiralog provides fast online backup that runs without requiring anyFinterruption to applications or users. This reduces the amount of timerequired to manage your system.GYou can save either a whole volume or the parts that have changed sinceHa previous save. You can restore either a whole volume or selected filesand directories.o ScalabilityDSpiralog keeps up with growing data requirements and makes data man-Dagement much simpler. It supports 10's of millions of files per vol-Cume by allowing huge directories. It also provides support for hugeCfiles, an order of magnitude larger than those supported by today's
file systems.Fo A high-performance write-behind software cache on each computer us- ing SpiralogC February 1997 FThe caches are automatically kept coherent throughout an OpenVMS Clus-Eter. Additionally, Spiralog provides cache ordering guarantees to en-1sure immediate recovery after a computer failure.+o Compatibility with existing applicationsFSpiralog supports existing OpenVMS programming interfaces for file ac-Hcess, such as Record Management Service (RMS) and run time library (RTL)Cfunctions. There is no need to recompile or relink existing OpenVMS
applications.Do A Spiralog utility that allows system managers to set up and man- age Spiralog volumesRESTRICTIONS:Spiralog is supported only under the following conditions:Fo Spiralog must be used with disks that can be considered error-free.H This restriction protects against the failure of a block on the phys-D ical disk media. Spiralog requires that the underlying disks must+ be configured with one of the following:6 - Volume Shadowing for OpenVMS V7.1 (SPD 47.04.xx)@ - StorageWorks RAID Software for OpenVMS V2.4 (SPD 46.49.xx)C - StorageWorks HSX controllers with Disk Mirroring (RAID 1) en- abledD - Any other disk that provides redundancy to protect against me-6 dia errors, such as RAID 5 arrays or shadow setsDo Spiralog volumes must run at no more than 80% full. A full Spira-G log disk becomes a read-only volume, where you cannot delete a file.C Recovery may involve a full BACKUP, reinitialization of the vol-D ume, and a selective restore to reduce the amount of data on your
volume.Go Serving Spiralog volumes via MSCP to other nodes in an OpenVMS Clus-$ ter environment is not supported." 2 Eo Spiralog volumes are created with write-behind caching enabled. InD the event of a system failure you may loose data that was writtenF into the write-behind cache. To eliminate this risk you can use theC write-through caching option as described in the Spiralog System- Manager's Guide and Spiralog User's Guide.Co Access to Spiralog volumes from computers running either OpenVMSD VAX or versions of OpenVMS Alpha prior to Version 7.0 is provided7 only via network software such as DECnet and DECdfs.Ho Files-11 BACKUP is supported only for migrating data between Files-11G and Spiralog volumes. To back up and restore the data stored in Spi-E ralog volumes use the SPIRALOG SAVE and SPIRALOG RESTORE commands.UNSUPPORTED FEATURESDSpiralog does not support the features shown in the following table.EIf you want to use these features, you must use Files-11 (ODS-2). ForDexample, you must use Files-11 for your system disk and for disks on%which you want to enable disk quotas.C___________________________________________________________________UnsupportedCFeatures________Comments___________________________________________BSystem disks You cannot use a disk initialized with Spiralog as a system disk.BQuorum disks You cannot use a disk initialized with Spiralog as/ an OpenVMS Cluster quorum disk.6Volume sets Spiralog does not support volume sets.4RAM disks Spiralog does not support RAM disks.@Disk quotas Disk quotas are permanently disabled on Spiralog volumes.CPage and swap If you put page or swap files on a Spiralog volume,Cfiles your system may hang if it becomes short of memory." 3 CUnsupported________________________________________________________CFeatures________Comments___________________________________________@Aliases for Spiralog supports aliases for files, but not fordirectories directories.?Erase on When you delete a file or directory in a Spira-@delete log volume, the disk blocks that it used are not" physically erased.CMovefile Attempts to use the Movefile feature fail on Spira- log volumes.BVersion All files and directories in Spiralog volumes have8limits a version limit of 0 (no version limit).BExpiration All files and directories in Spiralog volumes haveCdates___________no_expiration_date.________________________________HARDWARE REQUIREMENTSEo Each computer on which you install Spiralog or mount Spiralog vol-/ umes must have at least 64 Mbytes of memory.Ao A Spiralog volume must have a capacity of at least 500 Mbytes.4o Files-11 (ODS-2) must be used as the system disk.Processors SupportedDSpiralog is supported on all OpenVMS Alpha systems, as documented inCthe OpenVMS Operating System for VAX and Alpha Version 7.1 SPD (SPD
