The final tally was 150+ softwareIpackages totalling 375mb of disk space. The breadth of software that wasLincluded on the CD was very appreciated by the tens of thousands of OpenVMS
customers.GI will be accepting software submission until November 6th. This givesGeveryone several weeks to round up their favorite software or to update?the existing software that you submitted to the V1 freeware CD.LIf you have previously submitted software to the CD and would like to updateLit, please submit a complete update. I will not do selective replacement ofKfiles. Simply ship a complete new saveset, and I will replace the completeproduct on the CD.GPlease feel free to forward this mail as far as possible. Everyone is Nwelcome to submit software for the freeware CD. For non-Digital submission, OI will need a "signed" electronic version of the release form (included below) sent to me as well.GI have included the simple instructions for how to package the softwareLfor easy inclusion on the CD. If you do not follow this packaging, I cannot-guarantee that the software will be included.Steve Zalewski-- 4Steve Zalewski Mail: zalewski@star.enet.dec.comHOpenVMS System Software Segment WWW: http://www.openvms.digital.com/6Digital Equipment Corporation Tel: (603) 881-14586110 Spit Brook Road, ZKO3-4/S23 FAX: (603) 881-0189Nashua, NH 03062-2698 Introduction ------------GOpenVMS Engineering is sponsoring an OpenVMS Freeware CD-ROM which willMcontain "public domain" and "freeware" software which runs on OpenVMS VAX and@OpenVMS Alpha. The purpose of the OpenVMS Freeware CD-ROM is toHprovide OpenVMS customers with easy access to public domain software and+"free" internal Digital software and tools.KThe guidelines for the software to be contained on the OpenVMS Freeware CD are the following:I0 The software must be unencumbered to the public. No license fees shall: be requested of or required by the customer for its use.<0 The software must run on OpenVMS VAX and/or OpenVMS Alpha.H0 Digital does not warranty this software in any way. It is provided as "as is" software.J0 Digital will not provide service for this software, fix the software, or% warranty that it works correctly. E0 Customers are free to adapt and change the sources for their needs.8 Freeware CD-ROM Software and Organization1 -----------------------------------------LIn order to facilitate the job of packaging the software on the freeware CD,1here is the simple process that must be followed:GBuild the software into a saveset. Each product must be in a DIFFERENTLdirectory. If the sources are included, place them in a subdirectory calledB.SRC. You need to supply the following files with each directory: - FREEWARE_README.TXT C This file must have the following format for the FIRST line:6 PACKAGE_NAME, CATEGORY, ONE_LINE_DESCRIPTION for example:P INTOUCH 4GL, LANGUAGES, High-performance 4GL for VAX and Alpha systemsJ The one-line descriptions will be truncated to 60 characters. ThisI will allow them to display nicely on the selection menus later on.I Any additional lines of text in the FREEWARE_README.TXT file will J be displayed to the user from the MENU SYSTEM, if they choose this package from the menu. = The recommended list of catagories to choose from are:	GAMES GRAPHICS	LANGUAGES$	MISCELLANEOUS MOTIF TOYS	SOFTWARE#	SYSTEM MANAGEMENT TOOLS UTILITIES( - FREEWARE_DEMO.TXT file (optional)J The FREEWARE_DEMO.TXT file is text that can explain how to try thisE software...or explains what the FREEWARE_DEMO.COM file will be showing the user.# - FREEWARE_DEMO.COM (optional)> If the user selects this package from the menu system, 3 the FREEWARE_DEMO.COM file will be executed.KEach directory should contain the VAX and Alpha executables (if possible), Mhelp text, documentation, sources (in [.SRC]) and then anything else you want
to put there.KIf the software is already kitted as a VMSINSTAL or PCSI kit, that is fine.LJust put the kits in the directory along with the instructions. PLEASE makeGsure that the .txt and .com files are easy to read and understand. TheEmore friendly your instructions and directions, the more likely that others will want to try it.I NOTE: In order for the software to be considered for inclusion on the D CD, the release form MUST be submitted with the software. E Electronic copies of the signed release form are acceptable.IOnce the software is packaged, you can submit it on a tape (tk50, TK70 orTLZ04 preferred) to:	Steve Zalewski	Digital Equipment Corporation	MS: ZK3-4/S23	110 Spitbrook Road	Nashua, NH 03062KIf you have internet access, you can send an FTP pointer to the location ofthe kit to:	ZALEWSKI@STAR.ENET.DEC.COM(and we will copy the kit electronically.GThe OpenVMS Development group is looking forward to your submissions... RELEASE FORM ------------OpenVMS Freeware CD--------------------DEVELOPER RELEASE FORM:=	As the owner/developer of this software, I release it to be D	included on the OpenVMS Freeware CD-ROM.
