Glenn,

Attached is a request for an addition for the SIG tape. Can you grab it?
(I will also be grabbing it.)

Ted,

Since there are still a lot of people without access to SIMTEL20, can
you grab this and include it in the spring 1991 vaxlt tape?

The announcement appended below is a slightly modified version of
one which was separately posted to both comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d and
comp.os.os2.misc; I apologize for yet a third posting, but a similar
posting back in December generated some interest here, and there IS
some new information in this one.

Of most interest to y'all will be the unzip sources (unzip41.arc)
and unzip ready-to-run executable (unzip41.exe, incredibly enough).
If you just snarf the latter, please also grab the two text files
unzip41.doc (a Unix-style [boo hiss] man page) and unzip41.notes
(VMS-specific notes written by yours truly; much useless informa-
tion therein, plus some very important stuff thrown in for bonus
irritation value).

The current version is much more compatible with various VMS file
types, but it still can't do variable-length records without help
(that's one of the important parts in unzip41.notes). Fixed-length
512 (ftp, Kermit "set file type fixed") and stream-LF (Zmodem, BSD
uudecode) are fine, however. If there are some Real (tm) VMS C pro-
grammers out there who'd like to work on this, feel free to join the
Info-ZIP project (e-mail to info-zip-request@wsmr-simtel20.army.mil)
--to the best of my knowledge, there's only one other VMSer involved,
and he's swamped. I surpassed "swamped" a long time ago.

Those operating mail-servers or other ftp sites are welcome to acquire
unzip 4.1 in ways best left unspoken. Mere mortals may wait for that
or attempt Simtel (or its mirror site, wuarchive.wustl.edu, within a
day or two) themselves. Please be sure you know the difference between
binary and tenex, and if you don't, contrive to find out from someone
else (remember the "swamped" part--have mercy on me, I beg of you :-) ).
Bug fixes and/or improvements and/or problem reports can be sent in to
info-zip@wsmr-simtel20.army.mil (but ask me before fooling with the time-
stamp code, because that's going to be my last big VMS contribution--
the current stuff is disappearing entirely). Flames...well, you know
what you can do with THEM.

Greg

I have uploaded version 4.1 of the Info-ZIP project's generic unzip
utility to SIMTEL20:

pd1:<misc.unix>
UNZIP41.ARC Generic unzip v4.1 for free public distribution
UNZIP41.TAR-Z Same as above, but compressed tar format

pd1:<misc.vaxvms>
UNZIP41.ARC Generic unzip v4.1 for free public distribution
UNZIP41.DOC unzip v4.1 quick-reference ("man page")
UNZIP41.EXE Info-ZIP's free UNZIP v4.1 for VAX/VMS
UNZIP41.NOTES VMS-specific setup/notes/warnings for unzip v4.1

pd1:<msdos.zip>
UNZIP41.EXE Info-ZIP's free UNZIP v4.1 for MS-DOS
UNZIP41.ZIP C source code for free Unix/VMS/MS-DOS UNZIP

UNZIP41.EXE (MS-DOS flavor) is a self-extracting archive created via
LHA. It contains an MSDOS executable of Info-ZIP's generic unzip
utility (compiled via Borland's Turbo C v2.0), plus unzip.man and
short text file.

UNZIP41.EXE (VMS flavor) is a plain old executable for VMS, compiled
with VAX C 3.0 under VMS 5.2. Read unzip41.notes for instructions on
how to set up a symbol for proper usage, etc.

This version of unzip has been ported to a wide array of Unix and
other mainframes, minis, and micros (to include MSDOS, OS/2, Atari ST
(kinda), and Macintosh). Although highly compatible with Phil Katz's
PKZIP and PKUNZIP utilities of MSDOS fame, our objective has been one
of portability and other-than-MSDOS functionality.

Please note that UNZIP41.ARC, UNZIP41.TAR-Z, and UNZIP41.ZIP all
contain the same files. They were uploaded in three different formats
for your convenience.
