Trev,

The Volumizer distribution includes some simple tools that will let you convet
a sequence of raw 2D images into a 3D tiff file. These can be found in
/usr/share/Volumizer/src/util. A good reference on graphics file formats is
the "Encyclopedia of Graphics Formats" by J.D. Murray and W. Vanryper by
O'Reilly.

However, from the description of your problem it appears that you have a set of
points, not necessarily on a regular grid, with values per vertex. If so, have
a look at voglUnstructured.cxx. You may not need a 3D texture format after
all.
