Description: While attempting to update the ESM fw from 9639 to 9661. One channel always went down and it only recovered after a ESM with fw 9640 has been installed. An investigation revealed that the ESM that is directly connected to a channel will pull the channel down if it had ESM code 9661. After the EXP710 has been upgraded to 9661, a drive channel went down, All ESMs that are connected to the drive channel are seen as unknown. On channel that did not go down, the Drive channels are seen as optimal. All other drive channels are going down as soon as a ESM with fw 9661 is connected to it. The event was triggered by some DS4500 controllers (and likely other) were found to have a problem, related to CR 95892. These controllers failed to connect to EXP710 at 96.43 or later, due to CRC errors caused during the EXP710 SOC PTBI Lite diagnostic. This is apparently due to minor timing differences in the Tachyons on the DS4500. Where Seen: When updating ESM Firmware (fw) from 9639 to 9661 when system is at 06.12.56.00. Symptom: EXP710 ESMs connected directly to the controller will have the link to controller stay down after a FW upgrade. In the 96.43 SBOD code, the PTBI Lite to PTBI Regular toggling was removed to resolve CRs 108149 and 94410. Resolution: The issue was resolved by adding in enhanced PTBI toggling, where PTBI Lite would be tried for 3 iterations before switching to PTBI Regular. Updated the HDS725050KLA360 drive firmware files to CTA. CTA fixes listed below: -SDB FIS A1 with an invalid SActive bit is sent to the host during NCQ Write operations. The following conditions can result in this: * Write Cache Disable * Mixed Non-NCQ / NCQ Write workload * Write DMA command followed by a sequential Write FPDMA command * FW includes performance improvement for NCQ Sequential Write with Write Cache Disable After Write DMA command completes, used cache segment is left active, then a subsequent sequential Write FPDMA command executes where a cache scan results in a Sequential Hit to the Active cache segment. This results in sequential Write FPDMA and Write DMA extending write operations to the disk. After all write data has been completed to disk, firmware tries to send SDB FIS A1 for NCQ Write command from the non-NCQ write path. This results in a invalid SDB FIS being sent to the host. The memory corruption was occurring when the ESM sent a response frame that didn't get taken off the loop for any reason and came back to it, which might happen if one of the ports on the ESM or controller tray were bypassed at the right time. This was fixed with new Vitesse libraries. The new Vitesse libraries also fixed a problem where the Vitesse code was occasionally incorrectly removing some spawned tasks and preventing them from firing, which was causing problems with loop diagnostics. There were some additional changes to help make sure we report loop diagnostic failures correctly by adding retries to the code for turning on fault LEDs in case of temporary I2C failures. The new Vitesse libraries also fixed some issues we were seeing with unexpected LIPs on the loop under heavy I/O loads. 3. Fixes in ESM firmware 9631 - Fix the notification problem between the Switch-JBOD chips (SOC) in the EXP710 ESM during the DS4000 storage subsystem powering up that might caused the EXP710 ESMs to falsely believe they were not connected to other EXP710 ESMs. This in turn lead the DS4000 controllers to think that the EXP710 drive enclosures were not properly clustered together (83970). - Fix the problem that might cause drive(s) to report a loss of redundancy after hot swapping the EXP710 ESMs as part of a ESM replacement procedure. The problem was caused by the SerDes PLLs on the SOC chips in the EXP710 ESMs locking onto the wrong frequency at SOC power-up, causing loss of access to drive(s). As part of this change to allow the EXP710 ESM time to boot up and stabilize after being hot-plugged, the EXP710 ESM firmware will now wait 12 seconds before unbypassing the external SFP connections. One visible external indicator of this change is that the EXP710 ESM SFP ports will flash for 12 seconds while they are held in bypass, until they are released to "automatic" /normal mode.
