FC_PD-Flowchart1 Connector Connector 1 Flowchart Flowchart 1 DS400 Problem Determination Guide About problem determination This guide provides problem determination and resolution information for the issues most commonly encountered with IBM Fibre Channel devices and configurations. The procedures in this guide are designed to help you isolate problems. Note: The PD maps require a wrap plug kit (CRU P/N 24P0950 - not supplied) to perform the loopback test. Where to start Steps: 1) Read the Notices and Trademark document 2) Make sure the customer’s data is backed up 3) Determine the physical configuration of your SAN 4) Perform a check of your enclosure and associated devices 5) Set up your enclosure for network connection to allow ServeRAID Mgr to manage the enclosure 6) Make sure your storage is configured correctly for OS access 7) In case of problems identify your symptoms. A check of common pitfalls that customers may encounter may help you in quickly isolating the problem. 8) Begin using the PD maps 9) Click on these links for helpful hints and information: Best Practices To use the problem determination correctly, begin by identifying a particular problem area from the lists provided in “ ”. The starting points direct you to the related PD maps, which provide graphical directions to help you identify and resolve problems. The problem determination maps might also refer you to other PD maps or to other documents. Always start with the smallest increment of connection possible and ensure it is working (e.g. host adapter to controller) before connecting more into the loop/fabric. Ensure that all connections are plugged securely and hubs/switches are powered on. Always keep dust covers in place on optical components when not in use. Maintain at least minimum bend radius on optical cables. Use Velcro that comes with optical cables not twist ties for cable management. Utilize indicator lights on devices to determine bad connections or components. Use OS and ServeRAID Manager log files to spot problems as they start to occur. In a switch environment use switch tools to determine problems. Always read the README files that come with your Fibre Channel components before installation. Make sure all the components and device firmware and drivers are at the latest level. If the Host has multiple FC Host Bus Adapters make sure that they are the same part numbers and that the drivers, firmware and BIOS are exactly alike. Utilize Zones or Storage Partitions to isolate areas of SANs where control and debug will be important. Be aware that zoning will mask storage and thus not be “visible” to other Hosts. Except in an emergency, never turn off the power if any storage subsystem fault LEDs are lit. Make sure you collect the logs from the ServeRAID Manager to capture the state of the controllers at the time of the failure.
